the editor’s desk
I feel we always need to aspire to take the best image that we can, in that given moment. Take the time and think about it, what is the narrative of the image? What is the story behind the picture?
For me, this narrative is driven by the editor’s or client’s brief. A creative idea with no boundaries is like a river with no banks. All the content is there, just no clear flow or direction. I Look to the brief to create the concept and capture the image.
The portrait
Photos do more than capture history, they actually create history. We choose what we photograph, we choose how we pose and we choose what to wear and what expression to put on. We curated this moment, we decided how it should be and if its not right, we delete and do again. It is in this moment that history is created.
Whether its a close beauty shot or a full body portrait, we choose to portray ourselves in a certain way. As Richard Avedon put it so beautifully;
“A photographic portrait is a picture of someone who knows they are being photographed, and what they do with this knowledge is as much a part of the photograph as what they are wearing or how they look. They’re implicated in what’s happened, and they have a certain real power over the result.”
the runway
“Everyday is a fashion show and the world is your runway” - Coco Chanel
Whether we are shooting in a studio or on location, there is always room to create a runway. Combining movement and pose, with glamour and a bit of attitude and you have the perfect combination for a traffic stopper image.
